“LOOK OUT!” KELLAN shouted to Clarie.
His warning hadn’t come in time, but thankfully Clarie jerked the steering wheel to the right to avoid a head-on collision.
The SUV still bashed into them though, ramming into the side of the cruiser. The slash of metal against metal, and the impact was enough to send them exactly where Kellan didn’t want to go.
To the ditch.
He could tell from the way the cruiser sank that their tires on the passenger’s side were now bogged down. Clarie threw the cruiser into Reverse, trying to get them out, but Kellan wasn’t holding out hope that would happen. After all, the SUV hadn’t gone in the ditch with them.
“Call Owen and tell him what’s happening. Then, call Jeremy,” Kellan said, passing Gemma his phone. “I need their help. Tell him I want the hands to approach with caution.”
That last reminder was a necessity because Kellan figured this was going to be another attempt to kill them. Later, he’d curse himself for that and try to figure out if Caroline had been bait to draw them out. If so, it’d worked because here he was on an open road with Gemma once again in danger.
Beside him, Gemma made the calls, and while Kellan knew that Jeremy and the others would come right away, it would still take about five minutes for them to get there. Too long, and he doubted whoever was in the SUV would wait that long to make a move.
He was right.
The SUV turned around and came at them again from behind, ramming into the driver’s side door again. It was the only saving grace in this. Gemma was on the other side of the cruiser, and if bad turned to worst, she could be able to get out and take cover in the ditch. In case that happened, he passed her his backup weapon.
In the near darkness, her eyes met his. She was scared, of course, but he saw a whole lot more. “If they get past us, they could go after the ambulance.” Her voice was a ragged whisper. “They could kill Caroline.”
Yeah, and Kellan figured that was the plan. Of course, there could be other hired thugs waiting ahead to intercept the ambulance. That’s why he’d wanted Gemma to call Owen. His brother would respond from the other direction and might be able to stop another murder from happening. In the meantime, Kellan had to do the same here.
“Get down on the floor,” he told Gemma when the SUV started turning around, no doubt to come at them again. It’d be an attack from the front this time. “Clarie, lower my window.”
Both Gemma and the deputy did as he ordered, and Clarie put down her window, too. She’d obviously given up on getting out of the ditch and took his cue about trying to stop whomever was behind the wheel of the SUV.
When the SUV sped forward, Clarie ducked down so that it would give Kellan a clear shot, but the deputy fired, too.
